Jackson Browne, Feist, Emmylou and House Band to appear at 40th

By Katie Klingsporn

On Friday — the shortest, darkest day of the year — the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is releasing its preliminary lineup, offering a promise of what will hit Town Park stage come the summer solstice.
Planet Bluegrass is planning on big festivities for the upcoming festival, which will be the 40th, and it has packed some significant names into the lineup among festival staples and up-and-coming bluegrass bands.Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Jackson Browne, Feist, Sam Bush Band, Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon, Trampled by Turtles and Punch Brothers are all on the lineup.

“We’re really excited,” said Brian Eyster, director of communications for Planet Bluegrass. “It’s a great start, and we will have a few really exciting additions.”

Singer-songwriter giant Jackson Browne, who played Bluegrass in 2000, is returning to the festival with an acoustic band. Bluegrass couldn’t release many specifics on single-day lineups, but Eyster said this is certain: Jackson Browne will perform on Sunday before the Telluride House Band closes the festival down.

“He’s just such a great performer,” Eyster said.

Also returning to the festival is bluegrass siren Emmylou Harris, who will be joined by country star Rodney Crowell, who started his career playing guitar in her band.

Richard Thompson, a British folk rock legend who penned songs like “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” and has been named one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone, will be back for the first time in 20 years. Eyster called Thompson a “brilliant guitar player, singer and songwriter.

“He’s just a knock-out artist,” he said.

Into the non-traditional slot comes Feist, a Canadian Indie folk singer who is a member of Broken Social Scene as well as a successful solo artist. Feist, whose albums include 2004’s “The Reminder,” is a tremendous artist known for her lovely vocals and jangly folk songs.

Up-and-comers Lake Street Drive, a band that features the bassplayer from Joy Kills Sorrow, will likely wow the audience with their rootsy acoustic soul sounds, Eyster said.

Also on the lineup: Celtic fiddling star Natalie MacMaster and her husband, Canadian fiddler Donnell Leahy, Minnesota string rockers Trampled by Turtles, fiddler and former Nickel Creek member Sara Watkins, Colorado jamgrass kings Yonder Mountain String Band and longtime favorites like Peter Rowan, Hot Rize, Tim O’Brien Band and Sam Bush Band.

The festival still has some major lineup additions to announce, Eyster said, and is planning for a banner year.

“In many ways, the lineup is rootsier than it’s been in the past few years and is sort of a reflection of the genre that Telluride Bluegrass has become,” he said.

Four-day passes to the 2013 Telluride Bluegrass Festival sold out in a record-shattering three and a half hours when they were released to the public on Dec. 5, and Friday and Saturday single day tickets have also vanished.

Thursday and Sunday single-day tickets are still available, Eyster said, and locals can also look into volunteering for passes.

Planet Bluegrass obtained permission from the Telluride Town Council to increase the maximum crowd size in Town Park from 11,500 to 12,000 for its 40th anniversary festival.

In addition, Planet Bluegrass revamped its local ticket option by selling locals passes at a holiday discount price during the month of November, much earlier than in years past. It was the first time ever that Planet Bluegrass sold tickets to locals before the general public.

DATE: 14th Sep 2012 – 16th Sep 2012
TIME: Starts at 10:00am

The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival takes place in Telluride Town Park, a renowned outdoor music venue with breath-taking mountain vistas for a backdrop. At the heart of our venue is the Fred Shellman Memorial Stage, a small, humble wooden stage that has held the weight of legends over the years.

When B.B. King performed here in 2004, he sat on this same stage, looked out at the mountains before him, and told the crowd, “Out of the 90 different countries I’ve been to, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than what you have here.” It’s not the altitude that’ll take your breath away. It’s the views.

Each Labor Day weekend, the tiny mountain village of Telluride, Colorado triples in size. Swells of passionate film enthusiasts flood the town for four days of total cinematic immersion, embarking on a viewing odyssey, blissfully spending entire days in flickering dark rooms. With only an appreciation of celluloid to guide them, these devotees flock to the show, year after year. Why? Blind faith. They don’t reveal the program until everyone lands in town. Yet the Telluride family trusts that a unique experience will unfold.

The Telluride Film Festival is not just a picture show. It is Tributes to luminaries who’ve propelled the medium forward; it is candid discussions with a film’s creator or the historian who champions it; it is discovering that the person in line behind you made the film you just enjoyed; it is engaging in lively debate with every manner of film lover in the summer sun of a Colorado afternoon, always minutes away from a new exhibition.

Telluride Blues & Brews Festival Lineup Announced

By: Scott | Posted in: Events | No Comments

The 19th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival proudly announced the initial 2012 lineup today. Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov’t Mule, and the B-52s headline the September Festival weekend, with additional festival appearances by Chris Robinson Brotherhood, MarchFourth Marching Band, Tab Benoit, Little Hurricane and The Lee Boys, with many more acts to be announced. Tickets for the 19th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, held September 14-16, 2012, are on sale now.

“We are extremely excited with the lineup this year in Telluride,” said Steve Gumble, Festival Director. “The festival weekend boasts amazing and legendary musical talent with much more to come!”

Those looking for the inspiration of the current jam band movement need look no further than Phil Lesh. A founding member of the venerable American musical institution, the Grateful Dead, Lesh has continued to inspire while pushing the envelope with his highly evolved musical performances. His performance in Telluride this fall is one of the most anticipated in the festival’s 19 year history.

For guitarist/lead vocalist Warren Haynes and his band, Gov’t Mule, creating a new album is akin to walking a tightrope: they write new songs that please old fans, while hopefully garnering new ones. It’s not a surprise their coined one of the hardest working bands in rock history…

It is well known that the B-52s are the World’s Greatest Party Band. And thirty years and over twenty million albums into their career, The B-52s remain among the most beloved rock stars ever. Their performance in Telluride Town Park will be one not to miss, as they serve up their unique blend of music with their combination of rock’n'roll, funk and retro-hip music.

Tickets for 3-Day passes, Juke Joint passes, and Camping passes are on sale now.  Single day tickets go on Sale June 15th.

If you are a lover of non-violence, and I know you are, help the San Miguel Resource Center to end domestic violence and sexual assault in the Telluride community by attending the annual fundraiser, the Chocolate Lover’s Fling. This event helps them to raise one third of their annual budget. If you are a lover of chocolate, it doesn’t get any better than dozens of bite sized chocolate desserts from premiere regional chefs, all centered around the “TV Land” theme. If you are a lover of dancing, DJ Harry will be helping us move with his exceptional music all night long. This year’s theme, “TV Land”, should inspire costume creativity from old favorite TV shows from decades past, to cartoons, to game shows, to reality TV shows.
At the Chocolate Lovers’ Fling you can dance, eat delectable chocolate, bid at the silent auction, participate in the cash raffle, and support a great cause all at the same time. There are cash prizes for the best dressed and good karma for all. Tickets are available at Two Skirts or at www.sanmiguelresourcecenter.org for $40 until Saturday, February 5th or for $50 at the event.
